Pontresina
Pontresina in the highest side valley of the Upper Engadine enjoys a sunny and wind-protected location with an open hillside terrace facing south-west. The elongated and well-preserved typical Engadine village rises from 1777 to 1860 metres above sea level. It is surrounded by dense pine and larch forests. Pontresina was recognised as a family destination in spring 2016.
The Sporthotel Pontresina is located in the centre of Pontresina, an ideal starting point for numerous activities.
January is a very special month in Pontresina - the coldest of the year and one in which there is so much to discover in the Engadin. Here are some ideas for January.
Hike from Pontresina to Lake Staz
An excursion for which you can take your time. Wrap up well in warm clothes and set off from the Sporthotel through the Stazerwald forest to Lake Staz, then on to St. Moritz and from there back to Pontresina by bus. The walk takes around one and a half to two hours.
Birdwatching
Birds can also be observed around Pontresina in winter, for example at the Upper Engadine Bird Sanctuary feeding station in the Taiswald forest. On Fridays from 11.00 to 12.00, bird experts are on hand to answer questions about the local birds.
Meeting point: The Upper Engadine Bird Sanctuary feeding station is located in the Taiswald forest, on the hiking trail to Val Roseg, approx. 20 minutes' walk from the Rusellas car park
Ice climbing
In the ice climbing garden in the Pontresina gorge you can take part in a taster ice climbing course. It is organised by the Pontresina mountaineering school. The 3-hour taster courses are offered several days a week from the end of December to the end of January.
